Shattered by Teri Terry

The riveting finale of the Slated trilogy! A thought-provoking psychological thriller set in a disturbingly plausible future where the government and its enemies compete to control the minds of the young
Kyla is in danger from both the government Lorders who erased her memory and the terrorists who tried to use her. So now she’s on the run. Sporting a new identity and desperate to fill in the blank spaces of her life pre-Slating, Kyla heads to a remote mountain town to try to reunite with the birth mother she was kidnapped from as a child. There she is hoping all the pieces of her life will come together and she can finally take charge of her own future. But even in the idyllic wilderness and the heart of her original family, Kyla realizes there is no escape from the oppressive Lorders. Someone close to her may be one of them, and even more frighteningly, her birth mother has been keeping secrets of her own.
In this stunning series finale, Kyla finally finds out who she really is, and the road to this discovery, and to deciding who she wants to become, is full of dangerous twists and turns that will keep readers riveted.

Despite it being over a year since I read Fractured (Slated #2) and over a year and a half since I read the first book Slated, it didn't take me long to be brought up to speed in the third book and final book of the trilogy. A few names and details kept evading me, but mostly I knew what was going on as Kyla undertook the final journey to find out who she is and what her story is.

By the help of her friends (rebels against the Lorders) she's shipped off to her birthplace, her birth mother and her hometown - but where she expected to find answers, love and tranquility, she finds questions, irregularities and trouble. Nothing is one-sided and as easy as she'd hoped, but Kyla being Kyla she takes it on herself to sort it out.

It's a very engaging book and quite the page-turner. Just like the prior books in the trilogy it is once again very well written and avoids the pitfalls of many a YA novel - there are no ridiculous love stories mucking up a plot that's focused on a dystopian yet very realistic "future" where the government rules the people with an iron fist -  and the people who oppose and fight this.

Shattered manages to live up to all the expectations the trilogy gives its readers and the final installment does in no way disappoint. We are given an enormity of information; all Kyla's questions are finally answered, but it never feels overwhelming as we are allowed to cope with the information along with Kyla, who's a rational and logical protagonist. As far as I can tell, every single thread is woven into the final scheme, there are no lose ends and the plot holes are minuscule. I hope to read more by Teri Terry in the future!
